JANUARY: I’m planning.
- Deciding what to plant and when
- Pulling out my saved seeds and determining what new seeds I need
- Buying or trading for the seeds I will need this year
- Washing out containers for starting seeds with a 10% bleach solution
- Checking my supplies of potting soil and seed starting mix
- Planting some herb seeds for the kitchen
- If I want to learn a new technique, I’m checking the library for books on organic gardening, container gardening, space-saving tips
FEBRUARY: I’m starting my Spring seeds.
- Broccoli, Cauliflower,brussel sprouts, herbs
- Setting up my light table
- Still collecting the seeds I need
- Researching greenhouse techniques
MARCH: I’m working the ground.
- Peas go in on the 15th if the ground can be worked
- Starting tomato and pepper seeds indoors mid-month (earlier for greenhouse project)
- Setting up the SWC and planting 1st phase of carrots
- Marking areas for planting and laying my square foot garden plan
- Starting up the compost bin with a good turn and some kitchen scraps. Water asap
- Basically, poking around outside
APRIL: Spring has Sprung!
- Setting out the humming bird feeders
- Watching the bulbs come up
- Planting and replanting perennials
- Continuing care for vegetable plants
MAY: Final frost date approaches.
- Hardening off vegetable plants
- Weeding!
- Fertilizing flowering bulbs
- Enjoying strawberries from the greenhouse
- Transplanting cold crops to the garden
- End of month: transplanting tomatoes & peppers
- End of month: sowing bean, squash, and flower seeds
- End of month: planting annual flowers
JUNE: Water, weed, and wait!
- Picking strawberries
- Watering, weeding, staking
JULY: The height of summer fun.
- Picking & freezing raspberries
- Making jam
- Making zucchini muffins
AUGUST: Here come the “dog days”
- Picking & freezing blueberries
- Picking tomatoes and peppers
- Making fresh salsa & bruschetta
- Canning salsa and tomato sauce
